Kim Duk Soo's SamulNori really shines on this release, essentially a jazz recording with Korean traditional samulnori percussion, recorded completely in one take with no overdubs. All the performers here shine with virtuosity. Four pieces on this record -- "The Changgo," "The K'kwaenggari," "The Buk," and "The Ching" -- highlight the four instruments of the samulnori ensemble, each spotlighting the performer in a solo. The remaining pieces are each based on a particular Korean traditional musical form embellished with a jazz approach. The results are fresh and energetic. Less pop-oriented than later recordings such as Nanjang: A New Horizon and not as rough as Record of Changes. Very jazzy.
