AllMusic Review by

Sometimes compared to Queen Latifah, though not nearly as well known, female rapper Isis was an associate of Professor X, the colorful Islamic MC and black nationalist who founded X-Clan. Isis showed a lot of potential on Rebel Soul, which proves that her rapping skills were strong and that her technique was excellent. On such uplifting selections as "State of Mind," "In the Mind of One," and "The Power of Myself Is Moving," Isis preaches a message of black pride and self-awareness without embracing the type of divisive separatist rhetoric that has characterized some Islamic rappers. A colorful character, the Professor is all over this CD and adds a lot to it. Though Isis received favorable reviews from the hip-hop press (especially on the East Coast), Rebel Soul was far from a big seller. And regrettably, a commercial breakthrough would continue to elude her.
