Put together to coincide with the release of Robert Altman's film Kansas City, this sampler traces the evolution of Kansas City jazz from 1925-39. Certainly recommended much more for general listeners than for completists, this CD has fine music (fortunately programmed in chronological order) from Bennie Moten, Jesse Stone, Julia Lee, George E. Lee's Novelty Singing Orchestra, Walter Page's Blue Devils, Fletcher Henderson, Andy Kirk, Don Albert, the Carolina Cotton Pickers, the Original Yellow Jackets, Harry James, Pete Johnson, Count Basie, Ernie Fields, Pete Johnson and Joe Turner, Mary Lou Williams, Harlan Leonard, Jay McShann, Horace Henderson and Billie Holiday. A fine introduction to the joyful swing music of Kansas City.
