The Hindu devotional songs called bhajans are a life-work for some singers and a powerful attraction for others better known in other genres. There are classical versions of bhajans, and mass-pop versions, and there is a core style that might be called traditionally rooted popular. This album presents a vocalist who, though living in India, is enormously popular in the Indian diaspora. Squarely in the traditional-popular vein, without pop trimmings or non-Indian instruments, this is wonderful.
