The Western Jazz Quartet, made up of jazz faculty members at Western Michigan University, once again adds special guests for a recording session featuring the compositions of trumpeter and jazz educator Scott Cowan, with Dan Kramlich substituting for the group's regular pianist, Scott Zegree. Regulars Trent Kynaston (tenor sax), bassist Tom Knific, and drummer Tom Froneck round out the group. The chemistry throughout the session is apparent, with many enjoyable solos by the front line. In addition to being a fine trumpeter, Cowan's charts are a treat, even though none of them break any new ground. "Boogaloo Land" would get any crowd on its feet, while "Overture for Naria" would be a great vehicle for any post-bop band. The upbeat closer, "Giant Mistakes," utilizes the chord changes from John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" as a point of departure. The expression, "Those that can't, teach," obviously does not apply to this excellent group of jazz educators.
