On this intriguing set, Steve Dalachinsky recites the words to his poems and short stories while Matthew Shipp improvises piano in the background. Dalachinsky's stories are often quite brief, sometimes being abstract, and at other times containing obvious insight into life's situations. His voice is inviting and one has no difficulty understanding the words he is speaking. In addition, the CD's booklet has all of the words to his stories. Shipp, an offbeat choice to be his accompanist, plays his role well, adding to the mood of the pieces without being intrusive or dominant. Collectors of modern spoken word recordings will find this CD to be of strong interest.
