Three songs recorded on February 21, 1989, and broadcast just six days later say more about the peak-time Happy Mondays than any of their regular studio releases ever did. Sessions for the BBC's John Peel often brought out the best in bands, but the Mondays really did pull out all the stops, tearing through party-centric takes on "Tart Tart," "Mad Cyril," and "Do It Better" as though their entire career depended upon it, and not just a few minutes of late-night radio enjoyment. Certainly the LP versions of all three pale in comparison, as the full-tilt energy of a Mondays live show merges with the clarity of the studio, and those seeking to understand precisely how Madchester came to (briefly) conquer the musical world should begin and end their quest here.
