Because Gary Motley has chosen to base himself in the Atlanta area, he is not as well known nationally as he deserves to be, in spite of the fact that he had strong enough credentials to merit a guest appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. This self-produced CD features the pianist with a talented local rhythm section, including bassist Neal Starkey and drummer John Lewis (who also served as engineer). Motley's interpretation of the haunting "Yesterdays" breaks fresh ground with his lyrical, laid-back arrangement, while his lush version of "I Hear a Rhapsody" prominently features Starkey. The pianist wrote several originals, such as the lively "Peaceful Moments" and the reflective waltz "When Land Meet Sky." It may be somewhat difficult to find, but this CD is worth acquiring.
