Catherine Wheel's second and final 12" for Wilde Club includes early versions of "Shallow" and "I Want to Touch You," two songs that would later enjoy leaps in improvement thanks to new sessions for the band's debut full-length. "Spin" is arguably the weakest of the band's early tracks, a trippy, winding, blissed-out wisp of a song that hovers around without doing much. Still, it's hardly a blunder. The barbed "Painful Thing" is extremely strong, hinting at their sublime use of dynamics. It's too bad that the song didn't find its way onto Ferment, but its aggression would have arguably disrupted the album's pacing, regardless of placement. Unlike its predecessor, Painful Thing was released on CD as well as vinyl (2,000 copies on each format).
