AllMusic Review by

Open All Night: In the City gathers late-night driving tunes from modern rock and adult alternative artists like Duncan Sheik, Daniel Lanois, and Freedy Johnston. The album manages to balance tracks from slightly underground artists like Beth Orton's "She Cries Your Name," Elliott Smith's "Miss Misery," and Kristin Hersh's "Clay Feet," with songs from classic artists, such as Elvis Costello's "My Funny Valentine," the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want," and Billy Bragg's "Dolphins." Morphine's "The Night," the Church's "Under the Milky Way," and John Cale's "So Much for Love" are some of the other highlights from this surprisingly hip, nocturnally inclined collection.
