This, spinART's initial release, fulfilled a very useful function when it appeared. The U.S. indie-pop revolution had been underway for a couple of years, but at that point the bands were still mainly represented (if at all) by small pressings of seven-inch singles or cassettes. This CD collects good songs already released on 45's by other labels, unreleased tracks by established bands and a few debuts. Great tracks by Black Tambourine, Our American Cousins and Jane Pow rub shoulders with offerings from more prominent bands including Velocity Girl, Magnetic Fields, and the Swirlies. The breadth of sounds here shows that while the Americans got a lot of inspiration from their British cousins, they came up with more diversity.
