One of MGM Records' countless posthumous albums of Hank Williams' music, On Stage! was of interest during the LP era for assembling 31 minutes of material from the October 1949 "Health and Happiness Show" broadcasts. Like the rest of Williams' LP catalog, this album has been supplanted by Polydor's late '90s release of the complete "Health and Happiness Show" recordings. At the time, however, it offered a glimpse of the Drifting Cowboys -- Don Helms on steel guitar, Jerry Rivers on fiddle, Hillous Buttram playing bass, and Bob McNett on guitar -- in their early days, and a look at what Williams was like in performance, although Audrey Williams is also present in these performances, sharing the stage with him. The annotation by Grant Turner is also very thorough, indicating that someone at MGM took Williams' legacy very seriously in those days.
