Tasmin Archer is a gifted songwriter and deeply soulful singer, but her recorded output since her 1996 debut has been notoriously infrequent. That's why this 2006 release was a cause for celebration amongst fans of tasteful AAA pop. Here Archer provides 10 glossily produced tracks that go back and forth between arch melodicism that recalls XTC, Elvis Costello, and Aimee Mann ("Complaints," "Emergency," "Hello") and more urgent rhythmic dispatches ("Effect is Monotony," "Take Care"). The sound has an anachronistic, '80s-sounding largeness to it that is as far removed from contemporary indie-pop as possible without being crassly commercial in the slightest.
