Issued in 2002, Oh Boy Classics Presents Don Gibson offers 12 Don Gibson hits, including the ubiquitous "Oh, Lonesome Me," "I'd Be a Legend in My Time," "Sweet Dreams," "Blue Blue Day," and "I Can't Stop Loving You." However, these are not the versions that were big hits at RCA. They are re-recordings Gibson made for Hickory in the early '70s. Varese covered this same territory with a little more honesty and a lot more of his actual hits for Hickory on 2001's 20 Greatest Songs, which is far preferable due to its ten or so songs that are not re-recordings. This tries to pass off the re-recordings as hits, sprinkling some of those latter-day sides along the way, and by doing so it's very unsatisfying.
