Two unrelated sessions cut for the Circle label in 1946 are reissued in full on this intriguing CD. Trumpeter Mutt Carey, a veteran of Kid Ory's band, is heard on a set of duets with pianist/singer Hociel Thomas. Carey could be erratic in his later years, but he is in fine form on the set of blues-oriented material. Trumpeter Lee Collins is heard in a similar setting, backing the great (and, at the time, recently rediscovered) blues singer Chippie Hill in a combo with Lovie Austin or J.H. Shayne on piano, bassist John Lindsay, and drummer Baby Dodds, highlighted by "Trouble in Mind" (which Hill had introduced back in 1925), "Careless Love," and "Steady Roll." Two numbers are instrumental trio features for Shayne. This set is a must for trad- and classic blues collectors.
