The Musiques Metisse festival has always found plenty of room for music from the Indian Ocean, a favorite of its founder, Christian Mousset, who runs the Marabi label. So it's no surprise that he's come out with a compilation like Musiques Metisses: Indian Ocean, with artists from places in the Indian Ocean who've been featured at the festival. Mostly they're from Madagascar or La Reunion, areas which have produced the most music. There are, understandably, plenty of established artists like guitarist D'Gary, and Jaojoby (king of the Malagasy rhythm called salegy), or the wonderful accordion player René Lacaille. But Mousset doesn't focus solely on big names; there's also room for younger talent, such as Salem Tradition and Nainako. Some of the tracks are licensed from elsewhere, but others are previously unreleased work for Mousset's own label, giving a good mix with the real flavor of the vast area.
