AllMusic Review by

Music for a Summer Barbecue is an odd budget-priced collection from EMI-Capitol Special Markets. The compilers have interpreted "summer" as "surf rock," so there are cuts from the Beach Boys ("The Warmth of the Sun"), the Sunrays ("I Live for the Sun"), the Ventures ("Walk -- Don't Run"), the Fantastic Baggys ("Summer Means Fun"), Jan & Dean ("Surf City") and the Marketts ("Surfer's Stomp"). In addition to these cuts, there are the theme songs -- Nat King Cole's "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer," the Lettermen's "Theme from 'A Summer Place, '" the Sandals' "Theme from 'Endless Summer," the Four Preps' "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)" -- that aren't surf-rock yet are tangentially related to "summer." As hodgepodges go, it's pretty entertaining, but it never gels together. Still, it's not a bad choice for budget-minded listeners wanting a schizophrenic soundtrack to a summer barbecue.
