AllMusic Review by

Singer/songwriter Peter Himmelman has slowly been building a body of work -- 11 solo records and three children's albums -- since the mid-'80s that rivals that of many of his more lauded contemporaries. Boasting 19 tracks that span nearly 20 years, Shout! Factory's Mission of My Soul: The Best of Peter Himmelman is the first ever collection of the Emmy-nominated television composer's solo work. Himmelman provides short anecdotes for each song in the liner notes, all of which -- besides live versions of "Always in Disguise" and "Closer" -- appear in their original studio form. Whether he's channeling Bob Dylan ("Mission of My Soul"), Cat Stevens ("Raina"), or Elvis Costello ("Beneath the Damage and the Dust"), Himmelman aims for the heart -- and usually hits a bull's-eye -- without insulting the brain. This is an excellent introduction to one of the genre's more liberating and accessible orators.
