Brendan Benson's Metarie EP has three tracks and preceded the release of 2002's Lapalco album in the U.K. The title track is one of Benson's favorite songs: one has to guess because he has gone back and recorded it many times. This however, is simply the album track. It is a punchy, catchy, modern power pop tune with a big fat hook. The dub remix by Alpha is sort of a misguided attempt to make Benson appeal to a different crowd. The remix is clunky and not very interesting. The third track is a non-LP cut, "Alternative to Love," which was left off the album for a good reason. It is pleasant but mediocre. Benson completists might want to pick this up, otherwise skip it, and pick up the Metarie EP released on Star Time since it has more songs on it.
