Mellow Dubmarine: Tribute to the Beatles is every bit as bad as it sounds, a misguided attempt to collect covers of Beatles songs by Jamaican artists into a two-disc compilation. Things might have worked out had they truly been dub versions, but there are no dubs here, just assorted Beatles numbers jerked into shape over reggae rhythms, and none of them work on a serious level, although quite a few of them are unintentionally laughable. The instrumentals work best, with "Lady Madonna" by the Crystalites, "Hey Jude" by The Dynamites, and "Something" by The Johnny Arthey Orchestra at least having the benefit of no vocals. It is possible to adapt almost any song into a reggae context, but that doesn't mean you should. At least nobody tackled "A Day In the Life."
