For what it's worth, 2002 was the year that downtempo/ambient music became the fashionable thing to listen to wherever you happened to be "chilling out." With an onslaught of chillout and ambient compilations flooding the market, the difficulties of presenting a clear picture of what exactly is proper electronic ambient music becomes diluted at best and just plain impossible at worst. Mediterranean: Ambient in Ibiza does nothing to help clarify this predicament, as the lush strings and overly polished production are more in alignment with new age or world music than electronic music. And while Ibiza is more well-known for its nonstop party action at a breakneck pace than its chillout experiences, even this would not serve as a proper representation of the music selection customarily associated with the island. Yes, it's soothing and all of the proper elements for relaxation are in place, but those looking for proper chillout music should look elsewhere for the goods.
