Meditamentum II belongs to a handful of albums culling rare tracks and live material released in the wake of Maeror Tri's dissolution in 1996. This CD picks up where the 1994 album Meditamentum had left, selecting compilation tracks and cuts from underground cassette albums released between 1993 and 1996. The track list eschews chronology in favor of a more listener-friendly curve and it works rather well, although not to the point of making the collection sound like a genuine album. Some tape tracks would have benefited from a good mastering job. For instance, "Tartarus" contains most of the elements of a great industrial ambient track, but its murkiness and limited stereo spectrum inhibit it from fully immersing the listener. Highlights include the beat-driven "Archaic Sensation" (from the 1994 tape album Archaic States) and the beautiful, dreamy "Take My Hope to Fertile Fields" (from the 1996 tape album Beauty of Sadness). Each track features the trio's trademark processed electric guitar soundscapes and spacy, ambient synthesizer backdrops, occasionally adding a beatbox track. This is not Maeror Tri's finest hour; the uneven sound quality means that its appeal is mostly restricted to devoted followers. And yet, the casual ambient/drone fan will find his or her fix.
