This CD presents a collection of modern pieces written by Japanese composers for the koto (the regular 13-string and the 17-stringed version), shakuhachi, and shamisen. All the pieces are melodic and traditional in nature, not contemporary or avant-garde types of pieces. Among the composers, two of them are known outside Japan: Hozan Yamamoto, the shakuhachi player, and Tadao Sawai, the koto player. The others are lesser known or not at all. We unfortunately feel the marked and unavoidable influence of Western music in the pieces; yet, in most of them the composers were able to maintain a noticeable Japanese character.
