Mark Colby, an excellent tenor and soprano saxophonist from the Chicago area, co-leads a quintet with keyboardist Frank Caruso for this CD from the Best label. The repertoire (which includes two versions apiece of "Waiting for Godo" and "When the Lights Go Out") puts the emphasis on current tunes, including Andy Laverne's 12-minute "Chappaqua." Colby has appealing tones on his instruments and is a strong improviser who deserves to be better known, while Caruso works quite well with him. The music is post-bop, sometimes a little funky and at times a bit explorative. It holds one's interest throughout.
