One could say that ambient veteran Dr. Atmo's contribution to the Ritornell series sounds like SLOW AND LOW, a classic Fax-label title by Atmo cohort Tetsu Inoue. In truth, however, MAN MADE MOTION is a brazen--note for note, sound for sound-piracy of Inoue's album. Fax-simile, anyone? When this was brought to Ritornell's attention, MAN MADE MOTION was immediately removed from the label's catalog. Atmo has yet to offer an explanation for the bizarre, possibly criminal circumstances surrounding the album.
Though disowned by Ritornell, MAN MADE MOTION slipped into international distribution before it could be recalled. Ironically, SLOW AND LOW is out of circulation, while MAN MADE MOTION can be obtained through most major channels. The sound quality seems murkier than Inoue's original mix, but there's little doubt that this is an uncredited clone. Like the revered AMBIENT OTAKU and ORGANIC CLOUD, SLOW AND LOW captures Inoue at the peak of his powers. Controversy aside, Inoue's morphogenetic blend of field-recorded sounds, processed samples, and gradually unfolding ambient electro-acoustics remains rich and rewarding. He's a master of atmosphere, drama, and mystery--qualities often lacking in electronic music. So file MOTION under "I" for inexplicable, and, of course, for Inoue.
