Dave Pell's final Liberty release embraces sunshine pop in all its groovy splendor, drawing on flower-power songs and sounds to create music a full 180 degrees removed from Pell's jazz origins. Mah-Na-Mah-Na is by no means featherweight fare, however. Buoyed by the sweetly seductive harmonies of an anonymous session group, the album creates substance from style, transforming bubblegum fare like "Sugar Sugar" and "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" with arrangements that capture the essence of pop sophistication.
