As with most releases in the Chrome Cranks oeuvre, this four-song CD EP revels in its smoked-out anti-exuberant exuberance. Sound a bit paradoxical? Perhaps it is, but the Chrome Cranks, with their deliberate lo-fi methodology, have found -- like similar New York acts of note, think Jon Spencer Blues Explosion -- that their hipness relies on maintaining a detached cool, even if it's as studied as Keith Richards' or Johnny Thunders'. But what keeps the Cranks just this side of art-scum priggishness is Peter Aaron's unselfconscious, visceral vocals and William Weber's beat-to-hell blues riffing. Lost Time Blues is, for the most part, oozingly down-tempo, but it's a concise, eclectic four-song workout. The title track thumps along nicely, but by track four, the listener has been dropped into the supplicatory, lamenting territory with "Heaven (Take Me Now)."
