Altoist Richie Cole is heard in prime form on a live session recorded at the Douglas Beach House in Half Moon Bay in northern California. The music, released for the first time on this 1995 Just Jazz CD, features the fiery Cole bebopping his way in spirited fashion with the assistance of pianist Smith Dobson, bassist Bob Maize and drummer Jeep Duquesne on three selections including his own "Tokyo Rose Sings the Blues" and a surprisingly cooking version of "As Time Goes By." Cole welcomes felow altoist Bishop Norman Williams to an explosive "Donna Lee" and a less successful "Big Bo's Paradise"; singer Eddie Jefferson guests on brief versions of "Summertime" and "Lester Leaps In." Overall this CD gives one a good example of Richie Cole's exciting "Alto Madness" playing of the late '70s, showing that bebop could be accessible and quite fun.
