This set captures Doug Sahm and his band in the mid '70s. Longtime musical cohort Augie Meyers (who was a key member of the Sir Douglas Quintet) is on hand with his rollicking organ playing. The remainder of the quartet is comprised of a rhythm section as well as tenor sax player Rocky Morales. Raw, rocking and exuberantly engaging, the Quintet tears through a set of Sahm originals and covers that offer a full portrait of his repertoire including his '60s hits "Mendocino" and "She's About A Mover." There are also selections by Ray Price, Charley Pride, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Hank Ballard. Their rendition of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" is a delightful surprise that plays up the song's inherent soulful balladry. This album serves as one man's tasteful tour through the peaks of rootsy American music.
