Acclaimed (and once highly controversial) Selby, the author of LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN, had a new book out in 1989 (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM), which may account for why he accepted thinking man's punk rocker Henry Rollins' invitation to do a joint European spoken-word tour. This consistently rewarding album from the tour (sans Rollins performances) finds Selby reading excerpts from EXIT, as well as poems and other works, including a short "biography" of his tour mate called "Autumn Ode." "Jesus Christ, God," Selby intones drily, "what kind of world is this? Life sucks and my girlfriend don't."
