Although drummer Pam Pameijer is the leader of this Stomp Off release and pianist Butch Thompson is by far the best-known musician in the quintet, the date is primarily a feature for clarinetist Thomas Sancton and Billy Novick's clarinet and alto. Many of the songs they perform were originally associated with Johnny Dodds, and both Sancton and Novick hint at the early clarinet master, particularly on their individual showcases (in trios and quartets). Best are the eight numbers in which both reed players interact with each other. Butch Thompson adds his third clarinet to the pretty "Moredo from Breda" (a Jabbo Smith song written in the 1970s) and "Trouble in Mind." On other selections, Thompson's piano and bassist Don Kenney are quite supportive, and Pameijer gets a lot of mileage out of his small drum kit. Recommended to trad jazz fans.
