Lionel Hampton was touring constantly during the 1950s and this second volume of a Vienna concert broadcast represents a typical night's performance, recorded at the beginning of a tour of Austria. Hampton is the star soloist for the most part, though pianist Dwike Mitchell has a few features and the band includes Nat Adderley and Wallace Davenport in the trumpet section. The vocal features for Sonny Parker border on rock & roll and aren't all that memorable, though the leader ignites the crowd with old favorites like "Flying Home," "Hamp's Boogie Woogie," (also known as"Hey! Ba-Ba Re-Bop") in which he plays his famous two finger piano in duet with Mitchell and "Air Mail Special." While the fidelity isn't as good as one would hope for a live recording from this era, this CD and its companion first volume only exist because of a young engineer taping the broadcast. Lionel Hampton fans will find plenty of exciting moments within this European release.
