Sue P. Fox's spoken word is as compelling as it is disturbing. Or put another way, it's compelling because it's disturbing. There's no easy way to describe Fox, an Olympia, WA-based spoken word performer. Her mesmerizing work is wholly her own, full of whacked-out voices that are eerie and honest, and with few reference points. Fans of labelmate and performance artist Miranda July, however -- whose work clearly draws on many of the styles and techniques Fox uses on this album's 17 pieces -- should appreciate the reissued material on Light Matches, Spark Lives. Simply put, whether she's discussing everything from beauty-editor letters or car-wreck personalities and mentalities, Fox is never anything less than mesmerizing and utterly disturbing.
