The musicians on this CD have yet to find much fame, but this is a particularly spirited and appealing post-bop jazz set. Clayton Englar is heard on several reeds and is most memorable on tenor, blending in well with the fluent trombonist Joe Jackson and vibraphonist Pete Chauvette. The originals hold one's interest, a medley of "Caravan" and "Virgin Jungle" works quite well, and Englar is strong on "Equinox" without sounding like John Coltrane. This small-label release is well worth acquiring and these musicians deserve to be known.
