Rob Crow's second solo release, after a split CD with the electronica experimentalist Lesser, is a bewildering collection of 30 song fragments ranging from the seven-second opener "Da Da Du Dum" to the seven-and-a-half-minute "Totally Fucked." The songs, recorded in ex-Heavy Vegetable bandmate Travis Nelson's apartment on borrowed equipment, are a goofy lot, highlighted by the exceedingly unfunky rap "Hi, I'm Rob" and a handful of similarly lighthearted efforts. Almost half of the songs are under a minute long, and most of them are no more than one sonic or musical idea repeated a few times before moving on to something new. So variety is not a problem, but there's not much consistency to the ever-changing noise rock. Slight but entertaining, Lactose Adept isn't a major work in the least.
