AllMusic Review by

Despite its French title, L'Essentiel is actually a German collection of some of Elvis Presley's biggest hits, including "Blue Suede Shoes," "Hound Dog," "All Shook Up," and "Return to Sender." The collection is somewhat scattered, spanning some of Presley's most rockabilly moments like "That's All Right," "Mystery Train," and "I Got a Woman," as well more arranged pop hits like "It's Now or Never," "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck," and "Hard Headed Woman." However, the collection's biggest flaw -- and it's one intrinsic to almost any single-disc collection -- is that it can't include enough of Presley's definitive songs to truly be called essential. "Love Me Tender," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Heartbreak Hotel" are chief among the classics missing here; while all the songs included range from good to great, L'Essentiel may be missing too much for many fans to justify purchasing it.
