AllMusic Review by

Bandleader, composer, arranger, percussionist, and vibraphonist Tito Puente recorded over 100 albums of dance-oriented mambo, son, salsa, and Latin jazz during his five-decade career, and it all started with the tracks he recorded for Tico Records in 1949 and 1950 that are collected here in this two-disc set. Included are mambo adaptations of jazz standards like "Caravan Mambo" (a version of Duke Ellington's "Caravan") and Xavier Cugat's "Cuban Mambo" along with a handful of original compositions, all combining a big-band sound with the maneuverability of a small combo.
