Dennis Pavao, the former singer of Hui 'Ohana (in the glory days with Nedward and Ledward Kaapana), recorded the bulk of Keiki Kupuna not long before his sudden death in 2002 from an aneurysm. The bulk of the songs are standards, infused with a light touch from Pavao. He switches between soft vocals in combination with others and his trademark falsetto throughout the proceedings. Regardless of the technique, he makes the song his own with a nice bit of tenderness. Also switching between Hawaiian and English (and perhaps a bit of Fijian), Pavao shows himself still capable of all manners of traditional Hawaiian song. The album is a coherent whole, worth hearing for fans of traditional Hawaiian in general, and more so for the old fans of "the Golden Voice" himself. An added treat is the slightly updated and beat-heavy version of the standard "Love Song of Kalua."
