AllMusic Review by

This well-recorded Giants of Jazz LP finds the Benny Goodman Orchestra in transition. Lionel Hampton had temporarily taken over on drums (giving the band a rhythmic drive more enthusiastic than had been heard since Gene Krupa's departure a year earlier) and, while Krupa himself guests on a hot version of "Chicago" by the Quartet, a small-group performance from the later of these two broadcasts finds BG trying out guitarist George Rose. Although Rose did not catch on, the stage was being unwittingly set for Charlie Christian's arrival later that year. Since these two radio airchecks are complete, some time is wasted with dated talk and novelties but there are enough strong musical moments to make this set worth acquiring.
