AllMusic Review by

Sidney Poitier meets Plato on Journeys Inside the Mind, a kaleidoscopic fusion of spoken word poetry, modern jazz, and Greek philosophy that remains one of the truly singular moments in the history of popular music. Even as celebrity novelty records go, it's unusually compelling stuff -- Poitier's sonorous voice boasts a rhythm and intensity that are profoundly jazz-like, complete with an intellectual ferocity that ideally complements the material at hand, while arranger Fred Katz's backings aspire to the metaphysical transcendence of spiritual jazz. Best of all, the album doesn't shy away from the theoretical extremes of Platonic idealism -- Poitier's journey leads the listener down some deep, dark paths.
