As a producer and DJ, John Selway has an uncanny knack for morphing his music into a variety of styles. Whether playing hard-as-nails techno for a packed club, or laying down electro-disco as an affiliate member of Fischerspooner, Selway is nothing if not adaptable.
Sadly, Selway's debut mix-CD, done for the legendary Journey by DJs label, seems to accommodate too much, walking the fine line between tech-house and progressive, and at times steering dangerously close to cheesy trance territory. Not that this is unprecedented. Selway's recordings with fellow techno artist Christian Smith have often been accessible as a variety of dance styles, but never have they been as flaccid as the tracks Selway selects here. Journeys by DJ: Lightwave is a seemingly unnecessary affair meant to please JDJ's traditional audience weaned on their age-old mixes by Paul Oakenfold and Keoki. Too bad Selway didn't instead choose to veer towards Coldcut's quintessential JDJ release, or the lesser-known mix by Justin Robertson, both of which might have suited his temperament better.
