Featuring giants of the swing, bebop, and hard bop eras, Jazz Piano Anthology: Swingers offers up a bevy of delights from Duke Ellington to Kenny Barron. The mix takes in both swingers and blues and includes a sideman roster that ranges from Ben Webster to modern bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Besides such hard bop gems by Wynton Kelly ("Kelly's Blues"), Cedar Walton ("Home Come'n"), and Kenny Drew ("Blues in B Flat"), there are classic swing staples like Duke Ellington and Strayhorn's duet version of "Take the 'A' Train" and Count Basie's fine "Basie's Thoughts." There are better jazz piano compilations that offer a more thorough and historically minded tour of the music, but this ivories mix will still please listeners who just want to take in some top-drawer playing by the best.
