Vibraphonist Terry Gibbs and clarinetist Buddy DeFranco teamed up for the first time for this live album, and the matchup was so successful that they have worked together on and off ever since, recording quite a few other sets. Gibbs' hyperactive bebop style clearly inspired DeFranco, who can play a lot of notes himself. With swinging support from pianist Frank Collett, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Jimmie Smith, the Gibbs-DeFranco quintet roars through such songs as "Air Mail Special," "Love for Sale" and "Samba Wazoo." This is the most difficult to find of the Gibbs-DeFranco collaborations, since Palo Alto soon went out of business, but it is up to the level of their dates for Contemporary.
