Mirroring Polygram's other vocal roundups on Verve, Mercury, and EmArcy, Jazz Club: Vocal offers up a royal overview of vintage jazz chanteuses and chanteurs. The 16-track disc mostly features prime sides from the '50s and '60s, with A-list types like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Tormé, and Billy Eckstine leading the way. Thankfully, there are also fine numbers by the relatively obscure likes of Carmen McRae, Jon Hendricks, Nina Simone, and Jimmy Rushing. Excellent singing, top-notch arrangements, and that nostalgic ambience -- what else is needed? Enjoy.
