Polygram keeps the high-quality Jazz Club series going with this generous showcase of tinklers from bebop to free jazz. Mind you, the selections are not all necessarily the best these artists have committed to wax, but the quality is still pretty high throughout. And the mix has breadth, too, as evidenced by cuts from often overlooked players like Lennie Tristano, Dodo Marmarosa, Red Garland, and Cecil Taylor. But, of course, there's plenty of fine work by such A-list types as Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Monk, Bill Evans, and Herbie Hancock. A jazz piano primer tailor-made for newcomers.
