The first Big Band Awards Dinner (was there a third?) was held on Jan. 12, 1983 and run by disc-jockey Loren Dexheimer. Some of the performances from that night's concert were released on this swing-oriented LP. Clarinetist Heinie Beau is heard on four songs in front of a strong trio (comprised of the great pianist Ray Sherman, bassist Ray Leatherwood and drummer Gene Estes), trombonist Herbie Harper takes Beau's place on two standards and Beau And Harper (along with trumpeter Bob Higgins) team up for the Dixielandish "Hindustan." Although a bit loose in spots, these informal jams are expertly played and well-recorded, and since Beau and Harper have not made all that many recordings through the years, this LP is worth searching for by swing fans.
