This set is certainly a mixed bag. Most of the selections feature Dave Cross' vocalizing (which recalls Dr. John a little) and some R&B-ish riffing and soloing from saxophonists Bill Baker and Don Hawkins. But thrown into the mix, along with "Fool's Paradise" and the many originals by Dave and Sue Cross (who plays bass) are Charles Mingus' "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and Steve Swallow's "General Mojo," as if to show that the musicians are capable of much more. In general this set (although not flawless) holds one's interest and shows strong potential for the group, which is based in Orange County, CA. This is worth picking up even if it is not essential.
