In October 1995, the employees of the Bronx-Lebanon Medical Center sponsored an all-star concert at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture. The resultant CD, besides being a fundraiser (for hospital equipment), documents a well-programmed concert of the highest quality Latin jazz. High-energy big-band salsa is interspersed with an elegant Chucho Valdes ballad, an intriguing Dave Valenti solo flute piece, and a wonderfully controlled conga solo by Carlos "Patato" Valdez that plays with time, timbre, and the audience's expectations. The Machito Orchestra is as big, bold and brassy as ever; an unexpected delight is the smaller, very tight ensemble playing of the Papo Vasquez Latin Jazz Group.
