Jack Sheldon does indeed sing on this small-label CD, but fortunately, he also plays quite a few worthwhile trumpet solos. Joined by a big band mostly arranged by Tom Kubis, Sheldon sings and plays spirited renditions of 13 standards, including "Don't Worry 'Bout Me," "There Will Never Be Another You," "Just Friends" and an uptempo "Oh, Lady be Good." Not all of the songs are necessary (particularly "Over the Rainbow" and "Hello Dolly"), but throughout the set, Sheldon shows that he is an effective (and very underrated) singer. There are also short solos from some of the sidemen, most notably valve trombonist Mike Fahn, but this is largely Jack Sheldon's show. Worth searching for.
