French trumpeter Alain Bouchet is an excellent swing/Dixieland stylist. He made his American debut on this 1990 recording, which teams him with cornetist Warren Vache (many songs have the two brassmen trading off and sharing ensembles), pianist John Bunch, guitarist Howard Alden, bassist Major Holley, drummer Jackie Williams, and, on three songs apiece, clarinetist Kenny Davern and Ken Peplowski (on clarinet and tenor). The tunes are all swing standards, yet sound quite fresh and lively, with Bouchet displaying both fire and lyricism. The interplay between Bouchet and Vache is quite fun and such songs as "Sugar," "September in the Rain," "You Can Depend on Me," and "Rosetta" are given happy and swinging treatments.
